What is a 100
Good Wishes Quilt?
To welcome
and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a
Bai Jia
Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt. It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a
patch of cloth with a wish for the baby. Part of the patch of cloth goes into
the quilt for the baby, and the other part of the cloth can go into a creative
memory notebook with the wish for the child. The quilt contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of
fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.
We found out about 100 wishes quilts through friends
who adopted a daughter from China. It is a tradition to greet
the new baby with a 100 Good Wishes Quilt. Although this is a Chinese
tradition, it is a great tradition for any child to be welcomed this way. What a
treat to read the good wishes when the child is older to know how much they were
wanted!
Click here to see sample designs that would
work well for a 100 Good Wishes Quilt. We have some new designs available! And
click here to see pictures of my trip to China!
You can either collect your own 100 Good Wishes fabrics from family
and friends. If interested, I have a letter you can modify with your information
to send out to your friends/family asking to participate in the project. Or
you can participate in fabric swaps to get fabrics and wishes from others
adopting from China. Click
here to visit other website which tells more about 100 Good Wishes Quilts. If you are
interested in joining a group of other adoptive parents of China wishing to swap
fabrics and wishes, click on the following link to join the Yahoo group.

Why are Ladybugs
significant?
Ladybugs are a sign of good luck in the Chinese adoption community. It is
said that if you see ladybugs that good things will happen soon! Because of
this, many people like to include fabrics with ladybugs in their 100 Good Wishes
Quilts. Original Quilts has a fabric website called www.bugfabric.com
where you can shop for ladybug fabrics.

you have another idea in mind,
I am happy to make it for you.

ladybug buttons to button this new poem over the other poem. This solution

Ladybugs for Sophia (Applique)
This is a crib size quilt. My client purchased the six ladybug blocks and
wanted me to make them into a crib size quilt for her baby. She picked the
ladybuggy fabric from my website
and we used it for the border. My client also purchased additional
ladybuggy fabric for additional decorations in the nursery. This was
completed August 2002.
"We absolutely love it!!
It is just perfect. I love the
quilting that you did-the ladybugs are so cute!! I will definitely call you for any and all

Willow's 100
Good Wishes Quilt (Sashing)
This quilt was made out of white flannel for the sashing, back and border,
and a soft chenille for the border fabric. Click on the second photo to
see the chenille up close - it is very cute! This is the sashing quilt in
the twin size. It measures approximately 70" x 98". This quilt
was completed July 2002.
The second photo shows a close up of the embroidery on the front of the
quilt, and the bottom photo shows the quilting between each of the
squares. The chenille has little flowers, so we quilted flowers throughout
the quilt to carry that theme throughout.
"I really wanted to
participate in a 100 Good Wishes Quilt project, but I had no idea how to
make a quilt. Pam alleviated all the anxiety I was feeling and helped me
to get all the materials I needed. The results surpassed anything I'd
imagined. It is truly the most beautiful quilt I've ever seen."

Lydia's 100 Good Wishes Quilt
(Pinwheel)
This is Lydia's 100 Good Wishes Quilt using the pinwheel pattern. Lydia's
mom picked out the cute border fabric, then we selected coordinating
fabrics for the background, pinwheels and borders. If you double
click on the picture it will enlarge and show a closer photo so you can
see the detail work in the quilting. Lydia's mom wanted the traditional
red thread used for the quilting, so we quilted red hearts throughout the
quilt to signify that all the wishes are surrounded by love. This quilt
measures 66" x 80".
The Quilting Cottage did the long arm quilting on this quilt. The photo below shows the detail of the quilting.
The lower right corner of the quilt is showing, the blue fabric is the
back of the quilt, and you can see the quilting of the hearts on that
fabric. This quilt was completed October 2001.
"I am very pleased with
everything about the quilt and can't begin to tell you how much I LOVE
IT!!! I am so glad that you did the quilt for me - your ideas,
expertise, skills, and thoughts have made the quilt stunning and something
Lydia will always treasure." -- Sylvia |

All quilts are different, we can take ideas from quilts you see here on this
site, or other quilts you may have seen. The quilts are priced using a formula
based on the difficulty of the piecing (design), the finished size, and the type
of quilting. This is a general guideline of pricing for your interest. Once
we discuss the scope of your project, then we will agree on a price for
completion.
All of these prices are based on the client supplying the fabric for the
quilt (front, back, borders, and binding). If the client wishes to have
Original Quilts purchase fabric or embellishments, those additional costs will
be added to the final invoice.
All money is quoted in United States dollars. Client pays all shipping costs.
The prices are for labor only. The client
needs to add in the cost for any additional fabrics and batting to complete the quilt.
 |
Pinwheel Quilts: vary based on the number of pinwheel blocks you have
in the quilt and the overall finished size of the quilt. As a reference if you use 100 of the Good Wishes fabrics (5 fabrics
in each pinwheel - four 5" blocks on the corners and one smaller block
in the center) and you have 20 pinwheels, the price is $500 for labor only. You need to select the
fabric for the back, binding, borders, the background of
the quilt, and the color in the pinwheel. Original Quilts can procure those
fabrics for you at a cost plus 25% fee. This quilt measures approx
66" x 80" which is a very large lap quilt - or would be great at
the foot of a bed.
|
 |
Sashing Quilts: We can design the sashing quilts either square
(10 across and 10 down) or we can design it to be a twin size. If 100 blocks are used, the price is
$400 for labor
only. You'll need to select the
fabric for the back of the quilt, the binding, and the sashing and borders
for the quilt. Original Quilts can procure those
fabrics for you at a cost plus 25% fee.
|
 |
Other quilt patterns can be done, however they will need to be priced
depending on the difficulty of the pattern and the size of the quilt.
If there are left over fabrics from the 100
wishes fabrics, we can also make quilted covers for the notebook
you keep
the wishes in (personalized with the baby's name on it). Notebook covers
start at $50. Or we can also make smaller baby blanks with leftover fabrics
- priced according to size. |
